Take my workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado!

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Incorporating Personal Imagery into Painting WHEN: Jul 1 - 5, 2024 9AM - 5PM Participants approach the process of integrating memorabilia and personal imagery into paintings as they deepen their practice. Students use found and personal photographs, manipulating them through analog media such as paint and collage. Pushing and pulling against the line between abstraction and representation, students find new access to generating images and content using a synthesis of many source materials. They create a small body of personal work throughout the week using acrylic, other water-based media, and collage on canvas and heavy-weight paper. Topics for discussion are conveying personal perspective, achieving multilayered surfaces, and creating visual space through shape, pattern, texture, and color relationships. |
* This class is open to students of any skill and knowledge level.
THE DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP IS FEBRUARY 12, 2024. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE RANCH CLICK HERE TO REGISTER ON ANDERSON RANCH'S WEBSITE |

Nostalgic Varnishes / Barnices Nostalgicos (10/18/23-11/11/23) at the Hapeville Depot Museum
Nostalgic Varnishes is a visual memoir of works created by altering photographs from my personal and family archives. These pieces were produced using materials and techniques that reduce and deteriorate the photograph’s emulsion, as well as methods where embellishments were added to the surface. The altered photographs serve as a tangible landscape of changing memory, relationships, and identity.
The images altered for Repressed Memories were ritualistically burned, sanded, and painted over. These works explore the layers and decay of memory in a cathartic attempt to eradicate idealized memories and permit the painted photograph to serve as a new, abstracted, and revised reminder of the moment. I introduce collage, laser cutters, and solvents to photographs exchanged by my parents and grandparents. New subjects are also presented: my immediate and extended family members in Mexico, old family friends, and my younger self. Both new subjects and developed techniques collaborate to chronicle a familiar, and also idealized, story for many immigrant households: a tale of a family separated by time, distance, and cultural differences yet bound together by effort, love, and an unspoken duty to each other that transcends borders. |

Arrivals : an experimental art show in a liminal space (9/1-9/30/2023) at the Hapeville Depot Museum
"Arrivals" is a show that teeters on the edge of experimental work provoked by the experience of liminality and liminal space. It’s the moment of missing your usual stop on the train and stepping into a place of transition: the platform of the unknown. This place feels so familiar, but it’s not quite your stop. Your daily pattern is broken, and you begin to see yourself as a new person in this unusual place and thus you are unusual too, an experiment. This ambiguous place lacks tradition and gives you a moment to explore before you board the train to your intended destination. Who do we become in a new place? Can we let go of the past and its visual language? How do we reconcile with the nature of an in-between state?
